WOOD SPIRITS

Meadow, a NY based artist, has been influenced by her spiritual studies and experience of working within nature. Her twig sculptures rightly named The Wood Spirits," are a part of her on going "Space Series".

The Wood Spirits" are primarily monotone and use twigs, small tree saplings and branches held together with wire. For larger abstract sculptural pieces and installations, chunks of tree trunks are used as grounding forms or base shapes.

The beautiful shapes and contours of tree trunks and limbs influence Meadow. They have a gracefulness and tender elegance unmatched by anything else she knows. Relying on the combination of these distinct lines and forms, she creates complex compositions. Quite like drawing on a clean blank page, Meadow draws with branch and twig shapes in the sky.

With indoor pieces lighting is utilized in front of the sculptures, casting dramatic shadows against a clean blank wall and silhouetting the powerfulness of the natural lines and form. Meadow has incorporate the use of recycled paper pulp because of its natural relationship to organic matter, as well as dried flowers, bird's nests and other found natural objects. Wire is used both as a decorative and functional element. For the figurative pieces, Meadow binds together hundreds of tiny twigs and branches carefully cut and fit in a manner which miraculously captures the very essence of human form. At the center of each figurative piece is a crystal forming the heart. Crystals have long been recognized, as a powerful source of energy - using them to represent the human heart, seemed a natural progression. The incorporation of cast papier pulp dolls used in the large installation pieces and some of the smaller wall pieces make a strong political statement. Meadow, as an artist, has chosen this method to express her opinion to the world.

The origin of The Wood Spirits" can be traced back to an artist residency she spent in the middle of the woods at Northwaters in Temagami, Ontario in 1991. Her surroundings obviously had a strong impact on her for she produced a series of work that represents the power, beauty and availability of natural materials, which encompassed her at this time. Meadow has continued to produce work within this series both indoor and outdoor sculptures and installations. They have a distinct and unique point of view, which has a powerful impact on the viewer.

Meadow's pieces evoke memories of ancient markers, totems or remnants of forgotten cultures one might stumble upon hidden deep within the woods. Although the standing figures resemble primitive or childlike "stick figures", there is a definite air of sophistication about them that draws the viewer into Meadow's world of magic and mysticism.
