Boid, or "bird" with a New York accent, is the title of Meadow's exciting series of pastel paintings with social commentary as the underlying motivation. They reflect the fast and glitzy world of New York's club scene and embody the images of the creatures that haunt it. This is serious work, with serious content, that is couched in the very flashy idiom of the realm that it comments on. They are unreal people, but their world is real. We recognize it and relate to it because it is our world. By disguising her protagonists in avian form, she lets us look at ourselves and our commercial world while suspending our judgment Perhaps Meadow's aim is to give us the means to look at our true selves, as in a mirror, while at the same time saving us from recognizing our own images. She shields us from the very judgment she is passing. She condemns us, but pardons us at the same time. The paradox is the same as in the commentary of the clown. We are granted, by the artist, the permission to laugh at our own absurdity. Meadow heals us as she shows us who we really are.
